A bedroom is a place where you rest and rejuvenate after a day’s strenuous activity. Therefore, the comfort it offers, the facilities available and its cleanliness are important. Despite the number of bedrooms in a house, the interior decor, colour tones and space utilization in each bedroom are the crucial factors that have an impact on the lives of the residents.

This is the most important bedroom in the house and it could be used by the head of the family or married children. Some designers even plan two master bedrooms in houses where there are grown-up children. Meanwhile, interior arrangements in a bedroom depending on the size of the bedroom.

Position: The most ideal position for the master bedroom is the southwestern corner of the house – referred to as ‘kannimoola’ in astrology. Meanwhile, the cot should be placed in such a way that the head is towards the south or east.

Size: A minimum of 14 x 12 square feet size dimension is necessary for a master bedroom to incorporate a dressing area and a study area.

Colours: Romantic colours such as violet, lilac, blue and lemon green suit a bedroom. Never choose dark colours, but in case you are particular about such shades, bedspreads, curtains or other accessories could be dark.

Lighting: A false ceiling will certainly add grandeur to the bedroom. However, the lights have to be arranged in such a way that they don’t blind you.

Curtain/blinds: Blinds, rather than curtains, suit a bedroom more as they let in light without compromising on privacy. But, if you are installing curtains, there should be two curtains – one thin and the other thick.

Headboard: Bedroom could be made attractive by giving a different colour to the wall behind the cot, fixing wallpaper there or attaching a headboard. A large headboard for the cot would give the master bedroom a royal look. However, wallpaper with a striking design and a big headboard don’t match.

Door: Special attention is needed on the door of a master bedroom. It should have a breadth of 90-100 cm. Some people also fix a double door having a total width of 120 cm. A good lock should be attached to the door as you would be keeping valuable items in the master bedroom.

Size: The bedroom set apart for children should never be small. In fact, kids’ bedroom has to be considered not only as a place to sleep but also as a play area, especially in flats and independent houses built on small plots of land.

Colours: They depend on the child’s age and gender. Normally, girl children prefer colours such as pink and lilac while boys like blue, black or red. Even then, the same child may prefer different colours as it grows up.

Lighting: Lampshades and fans displaying motifs of children’s favourite cartoon characters are available in the market. Meanwhile, switches and lamps have to be installed at a height that children can reach. However, such installations should not pose a danger to kids.

Door: A breadth of 90-100 cm is ideal for the door of a kids’ bedroom. Youngsters would certainly love a glass door or a door with several stickers.

Furniture: A small kid needs only a cot with a small height, but a big child may require a taller cot. Cots which could be adjusted for height are available in the market.

In case two kids are sharing a bedroom, two separate single cots are better. Bunk beds too could be preferred. Similarly, two study tables placed in two directions are ideal.

Much care and attention have to be employed while designing the interiors of a bedroom for senior citizens. As far as possible, their bedroom should be on the ground floor itself.

Position: The western side of the house is a good position for the bedroom used by the elderly. This is to allow enough natural light into the room but not intense direct sunlight.

Colours: Light-reflecting shades can be chosen for the elderly’s bedroom also. However, dark colours or washable paint up to a height of six feet on the walls could be preferred as senior citizens may keep their hands on the walls for support while walking.

Electrification: The elders should be able to operate switches of lights and fan from the bed. A bedside lamp is mandatory and a calling bell switch would be useful during an emergency.

Furniture: More than one cot should be placed in the bedroom set apart for seniors. Some elderly couples prefer separate cots and so two cots may have to be kept one away from the other. In some instances, the services of a home nurse may be required, demanding another cot. Ideally, the different cots have to be arranged around a bedside table kept in the middle of the bedroom.
