WASHINGTON October 12, 2022 – The American College of Physicians (ACP) commends the Biden administration for finalizing a rule to fix the “family glitch” in determining eligibility for financial subsidies for insurance plans purchased through Affordable Care Act (ACA) healthcare marketplace.
ACP recommended that this change be made to ensure that families offered unaffordable family coverage through an employer could receive income-based premium subsidies to purchase ACA coverage. Earlier this summer, ACP encouraged the administration to move forward with finalizing this rule to ensure our patients can access affordable, comprehensive health coverage. Closing this loophole will increase access to more affordable coverage and give families more coverage options. As we have seen through the improved premium subsidies offered during the COVID-19 pandemic, our patients want to have comprehensive insurance coverage, they just need to be able to afford it.
Affordability and lack of insurance coverage are major barriers to patients being able to access needed health care services, including preventive care that can diagnose disease when it is most treatable. This finalized rule is an important step in the right direction of ensuring that all Americans are able to access the care they need.
