The crime branch has nabbed Odhav resident Vinod Gaikwad — who murdered his wife, son, daughter and wife’s grandmother in cold blood — from Madhya Pradesh-Dahod border on Wednesday while he was returning to eliminate his wife’s alleged lover Lala. Gaikwad was caught in a drunken state with a knife he had bought in Indore to kill Lala. Exhibiting no remorse, Gaikwad told cops that he would kill Lala once he got out of jail. He had disappeared since Sunday after killing his family on Saturday. He first went to Surat, then returned to Ahmedabad with the intention of killing his wife’s lover. However, he again fled to Indore for the fear of being caught. He revealed to the cops that he had killed his wife Sonal as he suspected her of having an affair with mandap decorator Lala. He and his wife had frequent fights over the issue. Two months ago, his suspicion was confirmed when his son Ganesh told him that he had seen his mother and Lala together. Incidentally, Sonal was employed by Lala to stitch decoration material. On Saturday, he blindfolded his wife under the pretext of surprising her and stabbed her incessantly until she collapsed in a pool of blood. He told the police that he killed his daughter Pragati (15) next and his son Ganesh (17) soon thereafter as he believed that would be unable to survive the loss of their mother. He murdered Subhadra Savant (70), his wife’s grandmother, last because she often instigated his wife against him. After killing the four, he dumped the bodies in the bathroom and storeroom and cleaned the blood stains. He even tried to slash the throat of his mother-in-law who had come to visit but spared her at the last moment and even dropped her home at 5 am. Crime branch ACP D P Chudasama said, “Vinod Gaikwad had sent out his son Ganesh to buy shrikhand (yoghurt) and his daughter to buy gutkha before killing his wife. When they returned, he first killed his daughter and then his son and thereafter his wife’s grandmother.” Chudasama said, “Gaikwad told his mother-in-law not to reveal he had slashed her. When she went to the hospital to get the wound bandaged, she lied that it was caused by an accident.” After the crime, Vinod Gaikwad first fled to Surat from where he went to Indore in Madhya Pradesh. He was caught based on technical analysis of his location. Chudasama said, “He had come back to finish an unfinished task. He had decided to kill the person with whom his wife was allegedly having an affair and was caught before he could execute it.” Vinod had sold off his house in Nikol and had allegedly decided to settle down in another state after executing his murderous plan. Crime branch has initiated the process of handing over Gaikwad to the Odhav police station for further investigation.

Murder was well-planned Vinod Gaikwad had bought the knife from Kathwada and got it sharpened two days before committing the murders. Questions persist as to why he killed his son and daughter, both of whom were close to him. Also, cops are trying to understand why he spared his mother-in-law after engaging her in talk from 10 pm to 5 am. He injured her with knife before dropping her home.
